| Inter-regional bus transport was deregulated in 1999. This allowed for the expansion and establishment of bus traffic on routes where the strongest competitor, SJ, had previously enjoyed a virtual monopoly. In the last year, competition in express bus services increased. There are more cross-border traffic arrangements between counties/county councils within the country. Environmental debate has benefited SJ's rail traffic at the same time that SJ pursued aggressive marketing and pricing. Norwegian and Baltic bus companies began to traffic Swedish roadways and several new Swedish bus operators were established. The increasing number of players puts pressure on prices. The Internet will therefore become increasingly important as a cost-effective sales channel for bus companies.
